Firefighters rushed to downtown Charleston to extinguish a fire in a multi-use building just after 4:00 in the morning. Above the hotel portion of the building was a residential hall. One of the hall residents realized something was wrong when they awoke to shouting and saw smoke and fire billowing out of the front apartment, attempted to help free the other resident from the fiery room, but could not do so on their own. With help from the hotel staff, several fire extinguishers were used to dissipate the flames, eventually allowing the trapped occupant to get out. Everyone made it out safely, and no one was critically injured (the resident who was saved from the fire was taken to a nearby hospital but no major injuries were reported). Firefighters managed to contain the fire from the outside, keeping it from spreading to the other buildings. It was later discovered that the cause of the fire was due to several space heaters being present in the same room with combustible items close by; it was also revealed that no working smoke alarms were present in the residence.
