Thanks to the quick actions of concerned neighbors, a kitchen fire in downtown Eureka was extinguished before any major damages could occur. The fire started due to a grease buildup below the surface of the stovetop which resulted over time from normal use of the appliance. After igniting on the stovetop, the fire began spreading to nearby cabinets in the apartment. The tenant immediately evacuated the building upon discovery of the fire, warned neighbors to leave the premises, and the fire department was notified. Neighbors retrieved their fire extinguishers and were able to extinguish the fire completely before the fire department arrived at the scene. There were no injuries and damages were minimal thanks to the neighbor’s quick response, the tenant remaining in the kitchen while cooking, the property management company adhering to appropriate fire codes, and prompt notification of the Humboldt Bay Fire Department. The fire was handled safely and effectively due to the local code which requires that all apartment buildings of three or more units have a fire extinguisher on each level within 75 feet of travel.
