You don't have to be a trained professional to use a fire extinguisher effectively—even untrained bystanders can make a difference with one, when the opportunity arises.

Case in point—BEND, Oregon recently experienced a brush fire, behind some apartments, that was mostly out by the time firefighters arrived, thanks to some quick-thinking bystanders with fire extinguishers on hand.

The fire reportedly started around 8 am, behind the Sage Springs Apartments at Boyd Acres Road and Warner Place.

People in the area saw the flames, then called it in to Deschutes County dispatchers.

When the Bend Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service crews showed up, they found that bystanders had already knocked down most of the blaze with fire extinguishers.

No immediate cause was determined, but it was reported that fire officials would have an investigator look into it.
