Hastings firefighters responded to a call where a single-family home was reported to be on fire. Just after 11:00 am, the morning of the 11th, authorities arrived to find smoke escaping from the house—visible from the road. The response team did not have to do much to put out the fire thanks to the resident of the home taking initiative. The Hastings Star Gazette reported that, “The occupant was home at the time and, after calling 911, stopped most of the fire with a fire extinguisher before exiting the home. Because of her actions, the fire and smoke damage were contained to the bedroom and bathroom"1. No one was injured.
