Code Requirements: Use UL Listed Tamper Seals

    By Mark Conroy

One of the most critical components of every rechargeable fire extinguisher is the tamper seal. The tamper seal keeps the pull pin in place and prevents the extinguisher from being inadvertently operated.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) cooperatively assure safety, quality, and reliability of original and replacement tamper seals. Code-compliant tamper seals are designed and manufactured to strict standards, so when the pull pin is removed, the tamper seal breaks easily.

NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, requires the pull pin to be removed on an annual basis, which ensures this can be accomplished easily during a fire emergency. Corrective action is required, if problems associated with pin removal are found. NFPA 10 requires the following:

7.3.2.2.1 After the applicable maintenance procedures are completed, a new listed tamper seal shall be installed.

Simply put, tamper seals are required to be manufactured and listed to strict UL standards and break with a maximum force of 15 lb, when the pull pin is removed. To easily identify listed tamper seals, UL requires them to be marked with company information, company identifying symbol, or the “UL Recognized Mark”. Although, using both company name or company symbol and the UL mark is also acceptable. Brooks Flag Tamper Seals and Bull’s Eye Tamper Seals are listed, and they both use this type of system as proof they’re UL Recognized Components. Seals without this type of marking system are easy to spot and should not be considered as meeting UL’s listing requirements.
